Skateboarding in Detroit: Bringing New Life to The Motor City

January 26, 2017

Community Push is a grassroots group in Detroit that builds DIY skate parks and supports local skateboarders. You can imagine how few skate parks Detroit holds given the crumbling economics of the once booming industrial epicenter, but a small group of dudes who started the non-profit Community Push are looking to change that.

The idea came out of necessity; there was no where to skate, so they built up spots, they might fall apart, but they learned along the way and these DIY spots have started sticking all over the city. Now the creative community is revitalizing their city and bringing new energy to downtown life. While it's unfortunate to hear General Motors is still cutting jobs at the Detroit factory, and watch a city tries to pull itself up by its bootstraps, there's one plus to the now unoccupied factories and industrial spaces in Detroit; they all make some killer spots to skate.

Community push is putting use to the downtrodden and abandoned spaces that have become characteristic of Detroit, and are building these skate spots, not for themselves, but for the rest of their community to enjoy. If skateboarding has taught these guys anything, it's to get their hands dirty and go figure out how to do whatever it is they want to do.
