Danny Brown has released the video for his new track “When It Rain”, which marksa long-awaited musical follow up to his beloved 2013 LP Old.Brown announced that "When It Rain" is part of a new album which will be released sometime this year. The upcoming album is also Brown’s first release for the venerated UK electronic label Warp Records, since leaving Fool's Gold. The move to Warp seems like a perfect fit: Brown’s the perfect rapper to incorporate the kind of chaotic production known to come out of Warp's artists.
In the two years since he's last put out music, Brown has regrouped and come back with a more refined (but still characteristically himself) approach on "When It Rain". Brown has toned down the drug references and lewdness a notch, and instead seems to have realigned his focus on more serious matters. Brown sites the perils of his tough childhood in Detroit, while the video features inverted colors and static footage of injections, contortionists, and twerking; clearly products of Brown’s unique artistic vision.
Brown draws inspiration from a darker than usual place on the new track, and the end result is as powerful as it is satisfying. With his signature snarl on lock and seamless production from Paul White, Danny Brown has yet again crafted a song that strikes gold.
