Over a week-long period, psych-pop songwriter, Connan Mockasin and Devonté Hynes aka Blood Orange, wrote and recorded the Marfa Myths 001 EP with Gregory Smelley at the Marfa Recording Studio. The occasion marked the first collaboration between Connan and Dev, but spawned three new compositions that iterate both artists' significant approach to pop songwriting.
Marfa Myths is an annual cultural program in Marfa, Texas curated by the Mexican Summer record label. The pair's collaborative EP marks the first in an upcoming series of records that allows artists within the Mexican Summer crew to collaborate with mutual admirers and kindred spirits whose work lives outside of the record label's catalog.
The new EP showcases Connan’s choral melodies and Dev’s throwback funk leanings in “Feelin’ Lovely” and “La Fat Fur”, whereas “Big Distant Crush” is a gleaming example of the collision of their respective talents for crafting heartfelt ballads and sultry after-hours jams.
Dev Hynes & Connan Mockasin’s Myths 001 is available at independent stores as a limited edition 12" vinyl (1500 copies) now. Grab it from Norman Records here, and stream it below.
