Mick Jenkins is the funky Chicago-native MC, who is undoubtedly one of the most promising up-an-coming lyricists in hip-hop. A listen to any of his prior releases, including Wave[s] which came out back in August, makes it clear how true this statement is.
Jenkins' new track "The Artful Dodger" enlists popular Canadian producer Kaytranada and THEMpeople who come up with an ominous and dream-like beat - with a sample from BadBadNotGood - that acts as haunting cinematic backdrop for the rappers commanding wordplay. Mick unleashes furious verses on the two-faced Harvey Dent, while indirectly going at rappers that spit about their wrist wear, expensive clothes and other material things. With a slight echo-effect, it almost sounds like Mick is an overarching and faraway narrator of this dream as the listener spirals into oblivion.
Jenkins has an appreciation for profound statements and boasts a laid-back tone, yet his voice puts you at ease rather than making you think what he's saying isn't important.
Be on the lookout for Jenkins debut album The Healing Component, which doesn’t have a release date yet, and listen to "The Artful Dodger" below.
