When you think first wave British punk, you think The Sex Pistols, The Clash, but truth be told The Damned were there too. The oddball, weirdo punk band that played and acted with the utmost reckless abandon was seminal in introducing an authentic and never-before-seen punk attitude and style to the world. Now, comes the story of the long-ignored pioneers of punk, in the new documentary, THE DAMNED: Don't You Wish That We Were Dead. The documentary captures the band as it celebrated its 35th anniversary with the a world tour and found its estranged former members striking out on their own anniversary tour.
The doc, which was recently debuted at SXSW, is being screened in a number of locations, includes appearances from Chrissie Hynde, Mick Jones (The Clash), Lemmy and members of Pink Floyd, Black Flag, Guns 'N' Roses, the Sex Pistols, Blondie, Buzzcocks, and more. Shot around the globe over three years, the film charts the band's complex history and infighting.
There's no doubt that The Damned remain the antithesis of everything that pop society and the music industry was jamming down people’s throats at the time of their inception, and "THE DAMNED: Don't You Wish That We Were Dead," gives a telling perspective on the band that was at the forefront of a cultural movement.
