Cheena are pretty scuzzy, but that's what we like about them. That rough around the edges charm draws you in on the New York City-based band's debut album, Spend the Night With, on Sacred Bones. The album boasts a heavy-handed amount of '70s punk, mixed with NY glam, offering up ten sloppy, manic, and filthy rock tracks.
The band is an amalgamation of members who have all bounced around in bands in the New York punk and noise music scene for years - Walker Behl, guitarist Logan Montana, bassist Keegan Dakkar, and drummer Eugene Terry all met during their teenage years, and Margaret Chardiet met everyone in 2012. Around 2014 they all felt as if they needed to slow down, and try something different than the frantic shit they had been making and all started to embark on new projects. Montana and Dakkar wanted to go the way of hard rock and glam, while Behl and Chardiet were looking to play straight up punk. The group realized they were independently trying to start bands with each other and decided to try out all of their disparate ideas simultaneously. The result Cheena.
Cheena plays loud, fast, and unhinged, but with a collected coolness that separates them from their prior music projects.
