On March 4, Lolipop Records is set to release Running from the Blows, the debut full-length from Adult Books. Ahead of the record, the band has premiered the video for "Suburban Girlfriend," the album's lead single.
Hailing from the stucco-swathed suburbs of Orange County, California, Adult Books is a product of the region's rich punk rock tradition, which shines through on their new melodic punk track. Just as their self-titled debut Ep turned heads with its infectious melodies and sharp-tongued lyrical wit, so does "Suburban Girlfriend," boasting their usual slack humor against shimmering guitars and melancholy melodies.
While Running from the Blows will be released on vinyl via Lolipop, Burger Records will release the EP on cassette. Running from the Blows is a decidedly darker effort, although the band's knack for memorable hooks remains stronger than ever. The album's driving post-punk sound draws on New Order, the guitar work of The Smiths and the nervy urgency of The Wipers. Alternating between sardonic and sincere, the tightly crafted lyrics strive for an emotional honesty even at their most ambiguous. With a string of successful support slots for acts including FIDLAR, The Garden, Nu Sensae and Tijuana Panthers, as well as legends like OFF!, The Vibrators and Mike Watt, Adult Books has earned its spot as a standout in the LA music scene. They'll be playing a February residency at The Echo with accompanying acts like Colleen Green, Terminal A, Drinking Flowers, and Wyatt Blair.
