The Growlers are set to drop their latest album City Club at the end of the month. The unconventional surf-rockers first announced they'd be putting out their new album on Cult Records - owned by the Strokes' infamous frontman, Julian Casablancas - back in July. We've already heard the looming influence Casablancas has had on City Club, with the first single and title track that the band released a few weeks ago. His influence is clear on “City Club,” a slick, subtly funky groove that contrasts nicely with Brooks Nielsen’s gritty vocals.
Now we've heard the funky followup “I’ll Be Around,” which has Casablancas lending a hand again. The super groovy song is a contrast to The Growlers' well-known lo-fi, surf twang. A bit more polished and made up of big drums, infectious melodies, and pretty soulful synth solo, "I'll Be Around" has us excited for the rest of what's to come on City Club.
The band will also headline their annual Beach Goth festival in Oak Canyon Park on Oct. 22-23. Other slated acts include Bon Iver, Justice, James Blake, Violent Femmes, Gucci Mane, Albert Hammond Jr., The Pharcyde and Future Islands.
