We're only a couple days out from Preoccupations' brand new creation New Material, which is a pretty stellar continuation of their singular post-punk grit. The new album broadens and deepens Preoccupations true mastery of their sound.
The band has released a new single today along with this stunning video directed by Ruff Mercy. Shot at Saunton Sands in North Devon in the UK, the new video features Matt Flegel, the band’s songwriter, vocalist, and bass player, and conjures up the feeling of a mind unraveling in a chaotic way. "Disarray" bursts up like a blackened confetti cannon, the song's undeniably bright melody dancing over a refrain of "disarray, disarray, disarray" and literally nothing else. Flegel says that "a lot of this is about futility, trying to find something where there's nothing to be found."
Director Ruff Mercy noted, "I wanted to physically show that inner turmoil without having to have Matt or an actor run around with a painted face looking distressed so to cut up and distort & draw over Matt’s image felt like an interesting way to show this."
