Jay Davies is one of those super gnarly dudes from West Oz. Surfing in West Oz is no joke— rugged, shark-infested waters, and thundering, expert-only reefbreaks are a plenty. You can watch Jay hurl himself into this otherwise daunting abyss in his latest feature-length film, “Native,” which is a 16-minute honor to his West Oz roots and to his friends who were raised there.
The feature film actually came out earlier this summer, but you had to fork over your email to RVCA in order to get the download. Now you can stream the thing and let us tell you, it's one you're definitely going to want to stream. There's no frills or casual lifestyle bits spliced in the video; rather it's just high-octane entertainment from Davies' home base.
The reason Davies is so gnarly is because the film was only shot in three months, even though it seems like a year's worth of shooting. From July to September of last year Davies and his brother Wyatt charged ever swell, leaving us with the glory that is "Native".
It's not uncommon for most surf videos to get all vibey and weird, and include a ton of lifestyle shots, but that was not Davies' intention. He wanted to make something that would solely entertain, keeping it high-level and high intensity.
